4 Simple Tips to Remedy Rx Costs

The cost of prescriptions can really be a tough pill to swallow, but these tips can help you save money on prescription drugs:

  1. Consider an over-the-counter treatment first. For an occasional minor ailment such as joint pain, heartburn or allergies, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can try an over-the-counter treatment first.
  2. Ask if a generic drug is available. Generic drugs meet the same FDA standards as brand-name drugs and are certified by the FDA to be as effective as their brand-name counterparts, but usually cost much less. Refer to your prescription drug coverage for information about generic drugs and what you’ll pay for them.
  3. Use home delivery for maintenance drugs. Home delivery is convenient and often cost-effective if you take medicines on an ongoing basis (for allergies, birth control, diabetes, etc.).
  4. Request formulary drugs. A formulary is a preferred list of medications that are covered at lower copayments. Covered drugs that aren’t on the formulary (“non-formulary drugs”) are available at a higher copayment. Drugs on the formulary will cost you less. Ask your doctor to write your prescription for a drug on the formulary (which includes generic drugs and certain lower cost brand-name drugs), if it’s medically appropriate.
